ASPCA Day

April 10th, 2008
Posted in Pets | 6 Comments »

On April 10, 1866, The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was founded. In celebration of this anniversary, April 10 is Go Orange for Animals Day!

Go Orange for Animals Day is a tribute to the work of the ASPCAASPCA and to celebrate love and compassion for all living things everywhere. (Orange is the official ASPCA color.)

The ASPCA is the first and oldest humane organization in the Western Hemisphere!

What can you do to help celebrate and spread the word?

  • Wear something orange
  • Put something orange (and safe!) on your pet
  • Sign the ASPCA pledge to help fight animal cruelty, and ask your friends and family to do the same
  • Visit this page to find information to share with your kids about being kind to animals
  • If you were already planning to adopt a new pet, find a shelter or rescue group in your area

Please Help if You Can!

Donate to the ASPCA Today!

Wishing you a happy, peaceful and productive ASPCA Day!

You have to check out this story from CNN, “Dogs Live The High Life.” When their owner died in 2006, they were left $1,000,000. Ah, to live a dog’s life…

Hector’s Story

January 29th, 2008

“From Fighters to Friends” (CNN)

Hector is a 4-year-old Pit Bull who has been given a new lease on life.

Hector’s previous owner used him as a fighting dog. You know, the freaks sickos that force animals to fight each other, in the name of what they call ‘fun’.

More than 50 American Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes were found along with Hector on a property in Virginia.  Some animals were discovered to be injured, scarred and or chained to buried car axles. It gives even more, horrid details, but I can’t bring myself to type them so you’ll have to read it for yourself.

One of the dogs seized was deemed too aggressive and was euthanized. Fortunately, the rest still have a chance. Almost half were sent to a sanctuary in Utah where they will be worked with. Others were evaluated and are said to be ready to be placed into foster homes to eventually be adopted. Surprisingly, even after all they have probably been through, none of the dogs showed aggression towards people and have a good chance of being adopted out at some point.

A Pit Bull rescue organization in California requested the opportunity to evaluate and rescue as many of the animals as possible, and they were given the go ahead to do so.

Hector is currently enrolled in “Canine Good Citizen Classes”, so that he can be properly socialized. After graduation, he will go on to become a certified therapy dog. How about that?!

I’ve been around dogs all of my life, and I have a great love and respect for them. No matter what you do, they offer you their unconditional love. How a person can take that for granted and go so far as to torture an innocent creature is way beyond my comprehension.

In the time I spent as a volunteer at an animal shelter (Delaware County SPCA), as well as for a German Shepherd Rescue (German Shepherd Rescue of Southeastern Pennsylvania), I saw some of the worst imaginable cases of human ignorance, stupidity and cruelty first-hand. I’ll just never understand it.

Thank goodness there are shelters and rescue groups–and loving, caring people–that are willing to try to save as many animals as they can. They are the advocates–the voices–for the helpless creatures that are all too often abused, taken for granted and neglected. At least a few more Hectors may survive because someone cared.

That’s why I wrote the story about Reign’s surgery and then his update.

Here’s a great site for animal lovers, those looking to adopt a new pet or to find information on just about anything animal-related: Petfinder.

Even though Reign has had his surgery, he is going to need a lot of follow-up care–which translates to lots more $. Please, if at all possible, donate what you can!

Of Dogs and Cars

One of Madison’s favorite things to do is go for a ride in the car. And she’s always very good! However, never in a million years did we expect to see Princess Maddie alone in a car with Aunt Vicki (who loves Madison, but is leary of dogs)! (I know the photo is somewhat unclear, but we had to preserve this moment in history!)

Surgery For Reign

As I was doing my usual blog perusing this morning, I came across one that really touched me as a dog lover. Slacker Mommy posted about Reign, an 18-month-old German Shepherd who was mistreated by his previous owner. He has a badly broken leg and needs surgery to end his pain and suffering and to lead a well-deserved, happy puppy life!

If you are able, please chip in and lend a helping hand to this beautiful boy by clicking on the ChipIn box below. And please help spread Reign’s story! Give him the chance he deserves!

Heartwarming Canine ‘Tail’

I’ve always believed that dogs were amazing creatures. Intelligent, loyal, loving and forgiving. I came across a story where a Labrador Retriever woke ‘his’ 13-year-old boy to alert him that the house was on fire, therefore saving the boy’s life. Powerful stuff!
